Laser Gum Surgery
Laser dentistry is one of the newer developments in dentistry. Lasers can be used
alone or in conjunction with traditional dental procedures. Some of the major advantages
of laser surgery are: faster recovery time, decreased pain sensitivity, reduced
risk of infection and less bleeding.
Dr. Feldman has been using lasers in his practice since 1993 and co-developed a
procedure to perform laser surgery without using anesthetic. Thanks to his efforts
and other early users of lasers, patients are able to resume their normal routine
almost immediately after surgery with little recovery time.
The laser is a light source from the infrared end of the spectrum that uses low
energy power to treat the gums, often without anesthesia. The laser kills the bacteria,
seals the vessel and nerve endings and produces little if any pain.
In our office, some patients are candidates for periodontal laser surgery or the
laser can be used along with some traditional surgical methods, depending on the
individual case. The laser is also often used for uncovering dental implants and
for correcting a “gummy” smile.
